FC Tiraspol is the second team from Tiraspol. The club was founded on 21st of March 2002 when the team from Constructorul-93 moved to Tiraspol. Beforehand, Constructorul-93 was founded 1994 in the capital Chişinău. This was a successful club in the 1990’s decade. Constructorul won the cup twice and was the champion of Divizia Naţională in 1997. They played many international cup matches including a match that may changed the history of the club. After Constructorul played in an UEFA-Cup qualification match in Sofia in August 2000 the club was banned from all UEFA competitions for one year. After two red cards and a 8:0 defeat, player Iurii Mirza went off his head and tried to beat the referee, the president’s wife insulted the UEFA officials and the climax was reached after a clubs official threatened an assistant referee with a gun while he was sending a fax in their hotel. But this was not the main reason why the club was sold to Cioburciu in 2001. Valery Rotari, 53 years old president of Constructorul was killed in February 2000 in a hail of bullets just 200 metres away from his house in Chişinău (it was rumored that he was involved in Mafia structures). The family later sold the team to Cioburciu. Since the club was founded new in Tiraspol, the green-reds are known as a club with a good youth work. The professional team reached the UEFA Intertoto-Cup twice and in 2004 they played in the UEFA-Cup qualifications round.

Tiraspol has about 130,000 inhabitants, is the third-biggest city of Moldova and at the same time capital of Transnistria. "Tyras" (Τύρας) comes from the Old Greek, representing the riginal name of the Nistru river, this being also a Greek colony dated, most probably, with the year 600 AD. "Pol" has also a Greek origin, "polis" meaning fortress, one being located at the mouth of the river with the same name). Directly in the entrance to the town the empire of the president Igor Smirnov begins. His family has the control in the schismatic republic in all interests. Today numerous gas stations, supermarkets, television broadcasting stations, newspapers and other facilities which were pursued earlier by the state are under his control. Everywhere the group logo, a five-pointed sheriff's star is resplendent. Therefore Smirnov also belong the gigantic Sportcomplex Sheriff and the club FC Sheriff Tiraspol, founded in 1997. It is no miracle that in 2002 the biggest and most modern sports complex of the country with a football stadium and an athletics stadium as well as an Indoor arena could be initiated. In August 2000 they started to build the complex on a 65-hectare-area outside of the town. The main stadium is called Bolshaya Sportivnaya Arena in which 13,460 seats are available in the sheriff's colours. It is equipped with all possible technical highlights which may not be absent in modern European stadiums nowadays around international matches to be able to deliver. The floodlight right in the rostrum roof can be regulated, for example, in the gradations 400, 800, 1,200 and 1,600 luxes. The big stadium is used by both topflight teams FC Sheriff Tiraspol and FC Tiraspol, while the smaller athletics stadium is used by the second team and for postponed matches.
